Question Response Comments/Notes
1. Should education funding be available directly to families through a grant, scholarship, or education savings account so that parents can send their children to the school of their choice, including religious schools? N* As this is written I clicked no. A voucher system I can't support. My legislative position matches PSEA and my union (PFT) that public schools are critical and oversight of how charter schools spend tax dollars is overdue.
2. Should marijuana be legalized and sold commercially for recreational use? Y* Legalization is good for state budgets — Tax revenue from legal recreational marijuana has surpassed everyone's expectations. Colorado usually collects more than $20 million a month. In 2020, the state collected a total of $387 million. The California government collects more than $50 million a month. You can find similar stories in other states that have legalized. Legalization may be good for states' workers' comp programs — A new working paper by economists Rahi Abouk, Keshar M. Ghimire, Johanna Catherine Maclean and David Powell finds that states that legalized recreational marijuana saw a significant decline in the use of their worker compensation systems. They estimate that the number of workers aged 40-62 who received income from workers comp fell by about 20 percent following legalization. Evidence suggests that the reason for the decline is that marijuana provides "an additional form of pain management therapy" that reduces use of opioids, which are highly addictive and can be much more debilitating. Legalization has created jobs. Lots of jobs — A new report by Leafly and Whitney Economics finds the marijuana industry is booming. In 2020 alone, they calculate, it created 77,000 jobs. Across the country, there are about 321,000 jobs in the legal marijuana industry. Citation web site Legalization also takes the street sell and turns it into a taxable business.
3. Should the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act be amended to include "sexual orientation" and "gender identity," which would require public schools and other public facilities to open up restrooms and locker rooms to members of the opposite sex? Y* Equality for all persons.
4. Should Pennsylvania enter into the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which would include a new carbon tax on electricity producers? Y* Pennsylvania should advance into clean energy production. The increased tax can then be used to create clean energy jobs.
5. Should increases in state government spending be limited to the rate of inflation plus population growth? U* This decision would be based on the present state of the budget at the time I would hold office.
6. Should state taxpayer funding be allowed for elective abortions? Y* Medicaid should be included because abortion is healthcare and is private between a birthing person and their healthcare provider. Privacy in healthcare should not be judged by any outside entity who opposes a particular healthcare procedure.
7. Should all voters be required to show identification before voting? N* Not all voters especially senior citizens, and non-drivers have a photo ID. The voter registrations is on file at each polling site. Requiring photo identification would interfere not increase voter thurnout.
8. Should striking union members have access to unemployment compensation? U* As a union member, I would want the benefits. However, as it stands "Did you work when work was available?" makes sense. Therefore, I would need to research the issue to make an educated decision.
9. Should public schools be prohibited from allowing males who identify as females to compete in girls’ sports? U* I am certainly behind equality. In this case, I would need to read the most recent studies and make a decision based on the most recent evidence.
10. Should schools have to post curriculum online for review by parents and taxpayers? N* Educational decisions should be made by educators and not be put in a position for conflict by those without the knowledge base for the rationale of the curriculum.
11. Should funding for public and state-related universities follow the student rather than go directly to the institution? U* I would need to research and use the most recent evidence for the benefits of student versus university direction of funding.
